Karl-Anthony Towns reveals his mother is in hospital battling COVID-19

Karl-Anthony Towns reveals his mother is in hospital battling COVID-19”

In a 2017 interview with ESPN, Towns said his mother had worked in the Rutgers University medical department for over 20 years.

In the video, Towns said that he was told his parents weren't feeling well early last week and that he told them to seek medical attention immediately. Both went to the hospital and were tested for coronavirus, but his dad was released and told to quarantine while his mother remained in the hospital. Both were tested for the coronavirus, but he said it took days to get a result. She went sideways quick. She was very uncomfortable. Her symptoms - a cough, a 103-degree fever, difficulty breathing - "kept getting worse", Towns explained, despite the hospital's best efforts. She was deteriorating. She was deteriorating - and we always felt that the next medicine would help. I knew there was more days to come, but I felt that we were heading in the right direction. "This is the one that's going to get it done". "We're going to keep fighting".

Towns said his mother, Jacqueline Cruz, has been diagnosed with the disease and is now on a ventilator and in a medically-induced coma while fighting the virus that's recently brought the world to a near standstill.

Towns said he was in communication with his mother daily, and there came a point where it appeared she was finally improving, he said. I haven't talked to her, haven't been able to obviously communicate with her, I've just been getting updates on her condition. He wanted to post the video despite his raw emotions to raise awareness of how serious coronavirus could be.

Towns said he was revealing his family's struggle to advocate for the public to stay home and call for more resources for the medical personnel fighting the virus.

Even before his mother's diagnosis, Towns had already donated $100,000 to the Mayo Clinic, to help increase their testing capabilities.

"This disease is real".

"This disease needs to not be taken lightly", Towns said.

"Please protect your family, your loved ones, your friends, yourself", he said. "This disease, it's deadly".
