Playwright Terrence McNally Dies at 81 After Coronavirus Complications”

Playwright Terrence McNally appears in a portrait taken in his home on March 2, 2020 in New York City. He died of complications from the coronavirus, his spokesman confirmed.

McNally, a lung cancer survivor who lived with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, won back-to-back Tony Awards for his dramas "Love!"

His first Broadway play And Things That Go Bump in the Night, written when he was just 24, was panned - Newsday called it "ugly, perverted, tasteless" - and closed in less than three weeks.

Matt Polk said McNally, 81, died in a hospital in Florida.

McNally was a four-time Tony Award victor, and recipient of the 2019 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Valour! Compassion! in 1995 and Master Class in 1996. He also earned Tonys for the books for the musicals "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1993) and "Ragtime" (1998).

Heartbroken over the loss of Terrence McNally, a giant in our world, who straddled plays and musicals deftly. New York University also gave him an honorary doctorate in 2019. Valor! Compassion! became a mainstream Broadway hit.

PBS had worked with McNally for an episode of "American Masters" previous year. He also wrote the librettos for two operas by composer Jake Heggie: Great Scott and Dead Man Walking.

The four-time Tony Award victor and Pulitzer Prize nominee was the author of The Full Monty, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Master Class, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Love! "And he does that in order to turn Fred and me on to musicalizing it".
