Researcher jailed in Iran is free and returning home”

France on Friday released the Iranian engineer Jalal Ruhollahnejad who had been detained at the airport of Nice in France in 2019 over alleged violations of Washington sanctions against Tehran. Their trial had been due to start on March 3 but was postponed.

France has released an Iranian engineer Jalal Ruhollah Nejad, who had been in French prisons for more than a year, after declining the USA demand to extradite him.

Iranian authorities have released French academic Roland Marchal, who has been imprisoned in Iran since June 2019, a French presidency official said on Saturday, Trend reports citing Retuers.

Adelkhah, 60, an anthropologist and expert on Shiite Islam, faces charges of "propaganda against the system" and "colluding to commit acts against national security", according to the researchers' lawyer, Said Dehghan.

Adelkhah had been arrested on espionage charges, and though those charges were later dropped, security-related charges remain against her.

The Iranian judiciary's news agency Mizan Online reported the Iranian prisoner Jallal Rohollahnejad had been freed by France on Friday.

In Paris, their support committee has always claimed their innocence and demanded their immediate release, fearing for their lives. Marchal's colleague, French-Iranian Fariba Adelkhah, remains in prison in Tehran.

"We welcome relief that the coming of Roland Marchal at Paris after almost nine months of arbitrary detention in very harsh circumstances" Professor Jean-François Bayart, a part of Marchal and Adelkah's committee, told AFP.

Tehran has granted a medical furlough to US Navy veteran Michael White, who has been imprisoned for more than a year, while British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, imprisoned since 2016, was temporarily released on March 17 and allowed to live at her parents' home in the Iranian capital until April 4.

"The United States deeply regrets France's unilateral decision to release Iranian national Jalal Rohollahnejad from its custody", the State Department said in a statement.

Dozens of foreigners and dual citizens have been detained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards - a lot of them on charges of espionage.
