Roger Federer to donate one million Swiss francs to vulnerable families”

Roger Federer announced on his social media account that he and his wife Mirka had donated one million Swiss francs "for the most vulnerable families in Switzerland" amid the coronavirus crisis.

"We must help families in need quickly and unbureaucratically. Mirka and I have personally chose to donate one million Swiss francs for the most vulnerable families in Switzerland", Federer, 38, said on Instagram.

Our contribution is just the start. Together we can overcome this crisis.

According to official data from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 400 thousand people were infected with the new coronavirus on the planet. The Swiss health ministry has said that 8,800 people tested positive and 86 people have lost their lives due to the respiratory infection. The death toll from COVID-19 stands at over 19,000 globally.

Federer's message comes as the coronavirus pandemic has spread to 194 nations, infecting over 4 lakh people.

During his plea, Federer was heard saying, "I'm also staying home, and I haven't been shaking anybody's hands for quite some time now".

The government had already ordered the closure of schools and all places of leisure, including restaurants, bars and non-food shops.

Federer recently underwent surgery to resolve a longstanding knee problem and went on to reveal that he would be missing the French Open, which was scheduled for May this year.

The donation of 20 times Grand Slam tennis champion comes as sports stars, clubs and associations around the world continue to help rescue workers as part of the ongoing pandemic.
