The Justice Department said hearings for migrants in the so-called "Remain in Mexico" program that were initially slated to take place before April 22 would be postponed.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration instituted a policy previous year that has sent back some 60,000 migrants requesting asylum to wait on the Mexican side of the border for U.S. immigration court hearings.

EOIR said Monday that any individual with a hearing date through April 22 should still present themselves at their designated port of entry on their previously scheduled date "to receive a tear sheet and hearing notice containing their new hearing dates".

Though the spokesperson said the "Remain in Mexico" policy was not being "canceled", Monday's move will partially paralyze the centerpiece of the Trump administration's restrictive asylum policies created to discourage migration to the USA southern border.

Fewer than 100 people per day will be allowed into Mexico, it added.

The delays come after the administration announced Friday that it would deny entry to migrants, including those seeking asylum, who attempt to cross borders without authorization.

"Neither the MPP program nor any hearings will be cancelled".

Earlier this month, the Department of Justice canceled all hearings for immigrants who were not detained due to the coronavirus epidemic.

A Trump administration official says illegal border crossings have been cut in half, as stricter border policies between the United States and Mexico were implemented amid the coronavirus pandemic. But the department has been criticized for refusing to close most of the courts or delay the hearings of immigrants detained by the USA customs and immigration authorities, despite a wave of calls from the share of judges, prosecutors and lawyers. In the USA, the decision applies to all migrants.

Canada said it would turn back asylum seekers who walk over the U.S. It has resulted in the creation of makeshift camps where hundreds of migrants have waited for weeks, if not months, in squalid and unsafe conditions.
