United Kingdom government failed to act on its own alert messaging advice

On Monday night, Boris Johnson announced that the United Kingdom was going into semi-lockdown, with the public only allowed to go out for essential items, medical emergencies, one session of exercise per day or to commute to work if absolutely necessary.

The messages have been sent out by mobile operators on behalf of the government and so will appear on devices at different times - rather than to the whole country in one go. All non-essential shops including clothing stores, libraries and electronic shops have been ordered to close.

You can find the government's latest updates on the coronavirus in Australia via the link in the text message.

CORONAVIRUS ALERT New rules in force now: you must stay at home.

Mobile operators already have zero access to NHS online information and are in talks with the government to provide access to anonymous location data.

The message being restates the government's coronavirus slogan: 'Stay at home. "Protect the NHS. Save lives".

But now the government is to reinforce the instructions from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in a message to everyone's mobile phones.

Some users on Twitter said they have already received the message saying: "CORONAVIRUS ALERT GOV.UK". The author of this article has not yet received the message, but it is expected to arrive on most people's phones later in the day.

Because the United Kingdom does not have an emergency alert system, network operators are sending out the text on behalf of the Government, resulting in it arriving at different times.

Trials took place in Glasgow, Suffolk and Yorkshire, but the system was never put into practice.

The messages are similar to those used to alert residents during bushfires.

The second alert was a SMS message sent to affected citizens.

In South Korea they have made aggressive use of emergency alerts which some have credited with their relatively low infection rates.

In the United Kingdom, the NHS has also started to send out messages to people it recognises as most vulnerable to the virus and urged them to remain at home for at least 12 weeks.

"The Australian Government has begun sending text messages to keep you informed about the national response to COVID-19".
