100 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario this morning

100 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario this morning”

An 80-year-old woman who lived in a facility in Hamilton died in hospital, where she had been treated for the past week. Twenty residents were in isolation, a spokeswoman for the Durham Region Health Department said. The province generally defines institutions as long-term care homes, correctional facilities and mental health facilities. The facilities were already restricting non-essential visits.

The latest provincial public health information, released Wednesday, reveals 10,489 cases are under investigation, a one-day increase of just over 400.

Seven of the cases in Toronto contracted the virus through close contact, while others contracted it from recent travel to the US, UK, and Spain.

More than 35,000 people have been tested for the virus so far.

Ontario's order to close all workplaces not deemed essential by the provincial government takes effect at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. As a society we're being asked to make tremendous individual sacrifices.

Ford said the list was made following extensive consultation with retail associations, labour leaders and Ontario Public Service.

A spokeswoman for Ford said mental health and addictions organizations have warned that "shutting off the supply of alcohol and cannabis would put undue pressure on the health-care system as those undergoing withdrawal sought medical attention".

Power and telecommunications will continue to run, as will taxis, vehicle fix and rental businesses, companies that support IT infrastructure providers and clean drinking water.

More than half who said they had lost work said their employers were not compensating them and as many said trying to get employment insurance had proven hard.

Businesses which can continue operations with employees working remotely, or through other contingency measures, are being given approximately 36 hours to prepare and adapt. The LCBO and The Beer Store will also stay open.

The province's decision is in contrast to Quebec, which on Monday suspended all construction activity except for emergency or security services.

At the same time, the government said it would spend $50 million as part of a United Nations initiative to help the world's most desperate people fight the pandemic.
