B.C. has 42 new COVID-19 cases, total increases to 659

B.C. has 42 new COVID-19 cases, total increases to 659”

The province will work to provide such an estimate - and the desired context - at its COVID-19 briefing on Friday, Henry said.

The provincial health officer reiterated Wednesday that she is developing a provincial health order to prohibit all workers at seniors' care homes from working for more than one such facility.

"The 'burn rate, ' as we call it, is much higher than we would have expected", she said.

Henry said B.C.'s case count is still "a generation behind" because some people were exposed before protective measures were implemented.

The new order comes into effect this week, but Henry emphasizes it couldn't happen overnight, because there are so many different types of workers in long-term care - nurses, care aids, food service workers, cleaning staff - and they all have different types of contracts.

"It's a bit of a dance right now", Henry said.

"We have been scouring everywhere from dentist offices to sawmills to see if they can spare anything for our site", Desnoyer wrote in the post, made to a Lake Country community forum. "There are things we will be doing over the next coming days".

The number of COVID-19 cases in B.C. continues to rise but there are early signs that drastic measures to control its spread are helping, says the provincial health officer. But 173 of the province's 617 cases have fully recovered.

That means testing health-care workers, people in long-term care and people who are in hospital or likely to be in hospital.

Sixty-four British Columbians are being treated in hospital for COVID-19, up from 59 on Tuesday.

"Those are eight people who have had COVID-19 and have now recovered, which is very good news", said Dix.

To date, all 14 deaths from the virus in B.C. have been in patients over 70.

There are testing locations are operational in all communities across the Northern Health region; however, testing is by appointment and referral only.

"Additionally, of the total COVID-19 cases, 64 individuals are now hospitalized, 26 of those in hospital are in intensive care and the remaining people who have tested positive for COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation". "We are still in the waiting and watching phase".

"It is the maximum, but we know smaller is better", she said.

"It's heartening to me we're not seeing dramatic increases in hospitalization", she said. "There are four people now in hospital at Interior Health just to put it in context of what we're dealing with".

Across B.C., about 3,800 hospital and other care beds have been freed up to deal with a possible surge of COVID-19 patients.
