Chef Floyd Cardoz succumbs to Covid-19”

Chef Floyd Cardoz, the 59-year-old restaurateur based in the U.S., has died.

Hunger Inc. Hospitality, the company that Cardoz co-founded, confirmed his death in a statement, sharing that he had "tested positive for COVID-19, in U.S., on March 18 and was being treated for the same at [New Jersey's] Mountainside Medical Center".

Cardoz is survived by his wife, Barkha, their two sons Peter and Justin, and his mother, Beryl.

Before his death, Cardoz had returned to New York City from Mumbai, via Frankfurt, on March 8.

"Sincere apologies everyone. I am sorry for causing undue panic around my earlier post".

Cardoz was born in Bombay, India, and moved to New York City to work in restaurant kitchens.

The company had earlier confirmed that the restaurateur-chef had tested positive for the virus.

Australian chef Curtis Stone also took to his Instagram to pay tribute to his good friend. "Chef Cardoz has a profound legacy, both in India and the U.S...." His spirit of openness, collaboration and playfulness has permeated his restaurants here - and for this, too, we owe Floyd a great deal of gratitude. He trained with the Taj Group of Hotels for a few years before leaving for Les Roches, one of the world's leading hospitality schools in Switzerland, to broaden his familiarity with classic culinary technique.

He rose to fame in the mid 1990s with his popular Tabla restaurant in NY - he then went on to open Bombay Bar and was also known for his Bombay Canteen and O Pedro restaurants in Mumbai. "We are also reaching out personally to people who have interacted with him during his visit to India, so they can take necessary medical advice should they indicate any symptoms [fever, cough, shortness of breath] and or [put themselves in] self-quarantine". "I wish his personal and restaurant family all the strength in the world in this hard time".

Chef Floyd Cardoz's business partner Yash Bhanage shared a heartbreaking message with PEOPLE following the news of the Top Chef Master alum's death on Wednesday.

Floyd Cardoz was an influential chef who married regional Indian cuisine with French and new American flavors.

Chef Kunal Kapur, who is also known for judging "Masterchef India", too mourned the demise of Floyd. On March 1, 200-plus guests gathered at The Bombay Canteen for a Sunday brunch to celebrate the restaurant's 5th birthday.
