Spain coronavirus death toll overtakes China after sharp rise in cases”

The number of cases rose exponentially after that as it took only four days to reach from 2 to 3 lakh and three days to add another one lakh cases as it crossed 4-lakh mark on Tuesday.

As the coronavirus continues to hit the health sector with particular force, not only those who work in ICUs, but also those who are at the forefront of patient care, two family doctors are understood to have died from Covid-19, one in a town in Salamanca and the other in Córdoba, becoming the first two doctors to die in Spain from this cause. There are more than 55,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the US, though health experts estimate the number of those infected is actually much higher.

Spain also surpassed China, the ground zero of the virus, with 3,434 deaths, while confirmed cases exceed 47,600. More than 5,000 people have recovered, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the death toll is 2,077 in Iran as confirmed cases toped 27,000.

It recorded 738 deaths in 24 hours, the most casualties in a single day since the outbreak began.

Spanish public services are struggling to contain the virus from spreading.

Although China has the most confirmed cases with more than 81,600, Italy recorded the most deaths with 7,503 fatalities in almost 69,200 cases. China, in comparison, has registered 81,218 cases and 3,281 deaths.

Hubei, a central province that is home to some 60 million people, had announced on Tuesday that it was removing travel restrictions at midnight.

The death toll in France from coronavirus is much higher than the daily government tally, which only accounts for those dying in hospitals, a senior French health official said on Wednesday.

A total of 21,283 deaths have now been reported in 182 countries and territories.

Spain has signed a multi-million-euro contract with China to acquire medical supplies to fight the coronavirus epidemic, Health Minister Salvador Illa said Wednesday.
