WCHD: Thirty Confirmed Cases of Coronavirus in Will County”

JB Pritzker moved Wednesday to give residents reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic a three-month extension to file their state income tax returns, aligning IL with the federal government's new summer tax-filing deadline.

But Pritzker says the preventive measures the state has already taken, including ordering people to stay at home, closing restaurants and bars and shuttering all schools, will help "flatten the curve and prevent too rapid an increase in new cases".

"The report for today is sobering, as it is every day", IDPH Director Ngozi Ezike said.

IL is one of the states with the most confirmed cases of the virus.

On April 6, IDPH projected that hospitals would need an additional 28,222 non-ICU beds, 9,407 ICU beds and 4,704 ventilators compared to current capacity without any protective measures. In total, 66 of the state's over 200 hospitals are now operating with this expanded capacity.

Without the stay-at-home order that has been put in place, the state would run out of ICU beds that would be needed and the health system would be overwhelmed. Those worst-case scenarios indicate the state could need an additional 4,100 ventilators.

"We can't just test, we have to treat", Pritzker said.

Finally, there are four commercial labs and 15 hospital labs operating across the state, which average about 1,500 tests per day.

Officials also announced that three more people have died. IEMA is working with 26 additional hospitals across the state to open new triage centers.

While President Donald Trump has indicated that he is wavering on whether the impact of the virus is worth causing disruptions in the economy, Pritzker made it clear that he's "not willing to sacrifice anyone".

Pritzker's "stay at home" order, which was announced on Friday, remains in place throughout IL until April 7. "I am concerned that we may have to extend that deadline".

"Doing the right thing will eventually lead us to these numbers decreasing and eventually ending this current pandemic", she said. "We are in a city where COVID-19 is actively spreading through our neighborhoods today".

Those efforts include temporarily reopening old hospitals and expanding capacity in existing hospitals by acquiring critical equipment, such as N95 masks and ventilators. In a worst-case scenario surge, the State would dedicate several dozen existing hospitals nearly entirely to COVID-19 patients, moving non-COVID patients to other hospitals, including these re-outfitted locations.

Hotels also are being considered for isolation space for those who are exhibiting mild symptoms of the virus, or those who might have come in close contact with someone who has the virus.

Appearing with Pritzker Wednesday, the head of the trade group representing IL hotels and motels said his industry is expecting as many as 120,000 job cuts around the state in coming weeks and hailed the relief funds as "critical resources to hoteliers to avoid as many layoffs as possible". Interested individuals can visit for more information. "Second, we are working to increase our health care capacity statewide so that when we do arrive at our next phase - which should not be our worst-case scenario but will be a point where hospitalizations significantly increase - we have the capacity to meet that need", Pritzker added.
