School canceled in Alabama, classroom will move to online instruction

School canceled in Alabama, classroom will move to online instruction”

"Superintendents are going to be working very closely with you to make sure you and your children have all the materials they need to be successful in their school year", Ivey said.

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is calling for Alabama schools to be closed for the remainder of the year as the state battles the spread of the coronavirus. She said that it is best for people should stay at home if they have that option.

"I can not stress to our viewers enough, we must be serious about eliminating the spread of this virus". This is for real, this is a deadly situation.

Gov. Ivey said conditions over the coronavirus warrant implementation of these extraordinary measures during the state health emergency in order to guard public health and protect human life.

"The stay at home if possible directive is the only way we can mitigate the spread of this virus", she said.

State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey called the closures "unprecedented", adding "we've never had to shut down so many schools for such a long period of time".

Athletes in our local high schools learned that their seasons have officially come to an end today.

For students without broadband access, packets will be sent to their homes so they can complete their work.

Ivey, who had closed schools through April 5, said it became clear that schools can not reopen yet.

"The most important thing we will have to do when school starts back for K-3 students this fall is assess their learning and any summer slide or deficiency in standards", he said.

Alabama's death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic has risen to three as officials announced the new steps to limit the spread of the disease in the state.

Mackey said he hopes the school year will end by June 5.

Alabama Democratic Party Chair Chris England called on Ivey to follow the lead of multiple other states that have issued statewide mandates to stay at home.

He said other deaths are now being investigated to determine if they are from COVID-19 and expects to see cases increase for sometime.

"We plead with Alabamians to take this seriously", he said.

Ivey said a shelter-in-place order is not under consideration at this time, citing economic concerns.
