Microsoft acquires 5G start-up Affirmed Networks

Microsoft acquires 5G start-up Affirmed Networks”

Microsoft has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Affirmed Networks, which sells virtualized, cloud-native mobile network solutions to operators. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, the announcement indicates that Microsoft is positioning the acquisition as a way to bring telecommunications operators into the cloud to support their existing workloads, especially 5G.

Khalidi said that Microsoft wants to "empower the telecommunications industry as it continues to 5G", supporting network equipment managers and operators.

Founded in 2010, Affirmed Networks has alliances with VMware, Red Hat, Dell EMC, Juniper Networks, Intel and Tech Mahindra.

"We look forward to building on the great work by Affirmed Networks with its leadership in virtualised mobile networks", he added.

The company said that as it continues to extend cloud-based software-defined networking into the world of 5G connectivity, it recognises the importance of "deep and strong partnerships and interoperability". These solutions will include helping to manage networks in the cloud. A main offering is its Virtual Evolved Packet Core technologies, which are used for delivering various services, including "consumer, IoT, private LTE, Wi-Fi, GiLAN, VoLTE, CUPs, fixed wireless, edge compute and 5G services".

Affirmed Networks provides a software platform called UnityCloud that provides tools for managing carrier networks. Its Affirmed Cloud Edge technologies let enterprises host applications and keep the data locally stored. Affirmed solutions enable operators achieve as much as a 90% reduction in operational costs through virtualization.

With the acquisition of Affirmed Networks, Microsoft is getting into the 5G game in an interesting new way.

According to Khalidi, using cloud and software, as opposed to purpose-built hardware, will allow telcos to more efficiently build and operate 5G networks "more cost effectively, more rapidly and more securely".
