NYU Medical Students to Graduate 3 Months Early to Join Pandemic Fight”

In an attempt to conserve personal protective equipment and limit the spread of the virus, many medical schools around the country - including those in NY - have taken students out of hospital-based training.

On Wednesday, the New York University Grossman School of Medicine announced it would give some of its fourth-year medical students the opportunity to graduate early to intern at hospitals in New York City. "Burnout of our doctors has become a growing concern", the email said.

Abramson, executive vice-dean of medical school, said the university asked about 122 students who are expected to graduate this year if they would be ready to begin their internship at NY hospitals in April instead of waiting until July.

"With the growing spread of COVID-19, our hospitals inundated with patients, and our colleagues on the front lines working extra-long hours, we are still short-staffed in emergency and internal medicine. It feels like something this country needs right now is a few more doctors, and if we can be those young doctors that are willing to help however we can, I think we are all excited to", she said. Karen Antman, dean of the BU School of Medicine and provost on the medical campus, sent a letter to fourth-year students on Thursday stating that candidates will be able to choose whether to apply for a MA license or move to the location of their home.

"While the AAMC has not yet surveyed its member medical schools, the [Liaison Committee on Medical Education] has been working with several other schools that are considering or offering their students the option of graduating early", Dr Alison Whelan, chief medical education officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges was quoted as saying by CNN.

Hundreds of medical students in MA will join doctors in the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic about eight weeks earlier than they could have. "I'm proud of my classmates for the efforts they've shown going above and beyond in responding to an unprecedented health emergency".

Across the United States, there have been at least 59,502 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 804 deaths from coronavirus-related illness.
