Trump Doesn't Think New York Needs 30,000 Ventilators

Trump Doesn't Think New York Needs 30,000 Ventilators”

"And now all of a sudden they're saying, 'Can we order 30,000 ventilators?'" Trump said. "The good ones are very, very expensive". "And we need the president and everyone in Washington to understand that that's just a blunt reality".

Yesterday the president questioned New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's plea for 30,000 ventilators during a phone call he made during the Sean Hannity show on Fox News. His state now has about half the nation's cases. "The first line is supposed to be hospitals, local governments and the states".

The federal government has been sending ventilators to NY and more help is on the way, including a Navy hospital ship and temporary hospitals from the military and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"I don't do this joyfully, but I think that when you look at where we are, when you look at the number of cases still increasing, it only makes sense to keep the schools closed", said Cuomo, who added he would reassess closures closer to April 15.

"We also see hot spots like Detroit, like Chicago, like New Orleans that will have a worse week next week than what they had this week", Adams said this morning. According to the most recent figures, there are at least 85,000 confirmed cases in the United States.

"And the governor of MI, she's not stepping up", Trump said.

"So we've got something and I'm thankful for that".

Trump went on to single out Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, accusing the two Democrats of not doing enough to address the health crisis. "He's always complaining", Trump said of Inslee.

There over 542,000 cases of COVID-19 worldwide with the United States having more reported cases than any other country, according to the Johns Hopkins University model. "I don't know if she knows what's going on".

"I think that a lot of things are being said that are more - I don't think that certain things will materialize", he said. "All she does is sit there and blame the federal government". "We need it", she said on Twitter.

But many patients will have different requirements, and the settings on each ventilator need to be tailored to each patient's needs.

"I've asked repeatedly and respectfully for help".

It's not hard to hook more than one patient up to a ventilator, Dr Peterson said, and if there were two patients who were in the same situation, with "exactly the same size and lung compliance and disease process, it could maybe work".

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) urged the president not to minimize the shortage of ventilators for patients and called on him to use the Defense Production Act.

Hours earlier, Trump had taken issue with the very idea that states would need an influx of the machines. China was second with 81,285 cases, and Italy third with 80,539 cases. "You said you stand with MI - prove it". They had faulted Trump's refusal to use the DPA to force companies to manufacture critical supplies and his insistence that it should be up to states to purchase things like masks and testing agents on the open market. In the daily coronavirus briefing, Trump said that his administration inherited "an empty shelf".

Asked whether splitting ventilators between patients could work, Dr Mary Dale Peterson, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, told CNN: "The short answer is no".

President Donald Trump and elected leaders in NY are clashing again over the depth of the state's coronavirus crisis.
