Schumer 'appalled' over Trump letter: 'Stop the pettiness'”

On Thursday evening, as Trump stood before reporters for the daily White House briefing of the coronavirus task force and complained about partisanship, the White House released a letter from the president to Schumer mocking the senator for being "missing in action" and too busy with the "impeachment hoax" to prepare for the covid-19 outbreak that has ravaged their mutual native state of NY.

Trump's tweets apparently came in response to a tweet from Schumer, in which the senator echoed local concerns: "President Trump needs to harness industry to quickly produce more medical supplies and equipment under the Defense Production Act NOW", he'd tweeted. So I'm just appalled. Businesses are teetering. Stop the pettiness. People are dying. And so, President Trump, we need leadership, we need to get the job done. We need to get the job done.

Schumer sent his letter with the "best intentions", he told MSNBC's Chris Hayes.

"While companies that volunteer to produce ventilators and PPE are to be commended and are appreciated, America can not rely on a patchwork of uncoordinated voluntary efforts to combat the bad magnitude of this pandemic", read Schumer's letter to Trump. "Unfortunately, your state needed far more of a back-up than most others".

After Trump's letter was released, aides to Schumer released a background memo showing the two leaders have had many phone calls this week, including two Thursday, the last of which included the president saying he was sending a "very nasty letter" that he might apologize for after the fact.

"No wonder AOC and others are thinking about running against you in the primary". "If they did, they would likely win".

In his letter, Schumer suggested "a data-driven, organized and robust plan from the federal government" was the only to resolve the difficulty states have reported in obtaining medical equipment.

"You have been missing in action, except when it comes to the 'press, '" Trump wrote. "If you remember, my team gave you this information, but for public relations purposes, you choose to ignore it". There are more than 92,300 cases in the state, more than 13,000 patients with the virus are hospitalized, and about 3,000 are in intensive care units, Cuomo said on Thursday at a press briefing.
