Latest coronavirus updates in New York: Sunday, April 5, 2020”

New York, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, is scrambling to obtain ventilators wherever it can find them.

"This is a painful, disorienting experience", Cuomo said.

"We had paperwork. We had contracts".

Asked by another reporter if he anxious about hospitals suing him, Cuomo said: "If they want to sue me for borrowing the excess ventilators to save lives, let them sue me".

The governor suggested the order was made from China, where the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, commonly known as novel coronavirus, emerged past year. Documents were signed and the order was placed "but then you get a call that says we can't fill that order because we had all that demand going in", he said. How many ventilators the state has keeps shifting but, based on figures state officials have released in recent days, the number is north of 12,500. The federal government has sent about 4,000 ventilators. More ventilators were sent this week, President Donald Trump said Friday. Cuomo said at his daily briefing on the COVID-19 outbreak in his state.

Another 140 ventilators were also provided by Oregon Governor Kate Brown.

A donation of 1,000 ventilators are set to arrive in New York City on Saturday local time from China, said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Officials asked hospital executives how many unused ventilators they had and are taking 20 percent of that number.

In his daily briefing the governor said infections could peak in the state in anywhere from four to 14 days - but he cautioned that hospitals were not yet prepared.

The Governor also expressed anger over the short supply of essential medical equipment for healthcare professionals to help them deal with the surge in the cases across the state and the country.

He also thanked Chinese Consul General in New York Huang Ping for "his help in making all of this happen". Albany Med it is already rationing N95 respirator masks and is caring for 45 COVID-19 patients, nearly half of them in intensive care units.

We are talking to the federal government to be as helpful as they can but in truth I don't believe the federal stockpile has enough (ventilators) to help all the states because you can't buy the material at this point.

"What we are watching in real time is the greatest bloodletting in the American labour market since the Great Depression", said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM in Austin, Texas. As well as insisting the economy would have to reopen soon, after attacking governors including Cuomo and of course the media, and after saying Republican-led states which have not implemented shutdowns did not need to because "big land, few people", the president returned again and again to the supposed need for hydroxychloroquine.

"Nobody can tell you the number at the top of the mountain", Cuomo said. "Our reading of the projections is we're somewhere in the seven-day range", Cuomo said.

An emergency stockpile of medical equipment maintained by the United States government has almost run out of protective garb for doctors and nurses.

Governor Andrew Cuomo provided an update of the novel coronavirus in NY, which included an increase of 630 deaths since Friday.

"Watch Long Island. It is like a fire spreading".

That process was already underway at New York University, where fourth-year medical student Gabrielle Mayer will begin her internship in the city's hospital system early. The state has tested over 283,000 people.
