Trump says 'toughest' weeks ahead; New York gets ventilators in China”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), whose state has been particularly hard hit, has been scrambling to fill the gap in critical equipment, and on Saturday said he's poised to bring in 1,100 ventilators from OR and China. Such a surge would overwhelm hospitals, which now have just 3,000 intensive care unit beds statewide. "This will be probably the toughest week between this week and next week, and there will be a lot of death, unfortunately, but a lot less death than if this wasn't done but there will be death", Trump said during Coronavirus Taskforce Briefing. "There will be death".

Prior to the Saturday press conference, Trump met with top leaders from 13 different major sports leagues, including Major League Baseball, NBA, NFL, NHL, NASCAR, horse racing and others.

In many states, the peak of the virus is expected weeks in the future, though Doctor Deborah Birx said that the outbreaks in Louisiana, Detroit and NY are all on track to hit their worst point in the next six to seven days.

New York City and its adjoining metropolitan area in the states of New Jersey and CT has emerged as the epicenter of coronavirus in the USA where several hundreds of deaths are being reported every day. We will get you back out on the fields, and know that you will be playing baseball soon. "Whenever we're ready, as soon as we can, obviously".

Every major sports league, including the NBA, MLB and NHL, has suspended play. The person requested anonymity to discuss the private call.

"I'm not anticipating that happening in this state", said Newsom, whose state has three National Football League franchises.

Trump said the goal was to stay several days ahead of critical medical needs in each state.

"The fears of the shortages have led to inflated requests", he said.

Louisiana officials have said New Orleans is on track to run out of ventilators by next week. Governor Andrew Cuomo, whose state is at the epicentre of the national pandemic with over 113,700 confirmed cases as of Saturday morning, has pleaded for ventilators for days and lambasted what he has said is insufficient help from the federal government.

Health officials did offer some hope that social distance measures were working.

Because of the risk of infection, many people with critically ill relatives in New York City are unable to see their loved ones in their final hours.

"As sobering and as hard as this is, what we are doing is making a difference", Dr Fauci said. Newsom's comments stood in stark contrast from Trump, who said stadiums and arenas would reopen "sooner rather than later".

The coronavirus has wreaked havoc on the US economy, with employers shedding at least 701,000 jobs in March and a record-breaking number of people filing for new unemployment claims in recent weeks.
