Tokyo records 143 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours”

The United States on Friday urged its citizens in Japan to take action against a potential imminent surge in coronavirus cases there, saying they should either return home now or be prepared to remain overseas for an indefinite period.

The Embassy of the United States to Japan posted a travel alert Friday, imploring American citizens to prepare to return home in the wake of the strengthening of border controls.

"The Japanese Government's decision to not test broadly makes it hard to accurately assess the COVID-19 prevalence rate", the Embassy said on its website, referring to the illness caused by the virus.

Abe will likely announce his plans to declare the emergency today, the paper said.

Global cases of the new coronavirus have shot past 1 million with more than 64,000 deaths.

Sounding alarm over the high rate of cases that couldn't be traced, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike indicated last week that she would favour a state-of-emergency declaration as a means to help her urge residents to adhere to stronger social-distancing measures.

Once a declaration is made, prefectural governors covered under the state of emergency would be able to issue instructions "requesting" people refrain from going out and stop using commercial facilities, among other things.

He says there needs to be more testing.

The number follows the 118 confirmed the previous day, the first three-digit daily infection total reported in Tokyo.

But experts are anxious about the rise in the percentage of cases that can't be traced. And despite the temporary closure of some Japanese department stores and around 500 Starbucks stores, many bars and restaurants remain open and full of customers.

But beds are filling up in Tokyo and threaten to elsewhere, experts said this week.

While 817 patients were hospitalized in Tokyo as of Saturday evening, Koike said patients with mild symptoms will be transferred to metropolitan government-arranged hotels from Tuesday so that hospitals can accommodate those with more serious symptoms.
