United States braces for 'Pearl Harbor moment' as coronavirus death toll rises

United States braces for 'Pearl Harbor moment' as coronavirus death toll rises”

On Sunday, Surgeon General Jerome Adams called on USA governors who haven't issued statewide stay-at-home orders to at least "give us a week" of restrictions, as health officials warn of an accelerating rate of coronavirus cases and deaths.

Adams, appearing on Fox News Sunday, noted that the death toll from the coronavirus has not yet reached its peak, which members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force have said could be approaching within the next week.

"This is going to be the hardest and the saddest week of most Americans' lives, quite frankly". On March 11, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, told lawmakers COVID-19 was "about 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu", NPR reported. "It's going to be happening all over the country and I want America to understand that".

The total number of coronavirus cases in the US rose to over 300,000 on Saturday, with the number of deaths at more than 8,000, according to NBC News' tally.

There are more than 312,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the US and more than 8500 have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. "We don't have them", he said, referring to life-saving ventilator equipment.

Her warning came as the state of NY reported its first fall in coronavirus deaths on Sunday, with 594 fatalities compared with 630 on Saturday. But he also said the president "has been bad slow" to use the powers of his office to compel private companies to make protective equipment for doctors and nurses, adding that "we should be much more aggressive". "And so we always are struggling with trying to get information out to guide people that we know will help them be healthy with states' rights".

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump is warning of an increase in coronavirus deaths in the United States in the coming weeks.

"It's going to be a very deadly period, unfortunately", US President Donald Trump said at a White House news conference.

"The governors are intensely protective of their right, and rightly so, to be able to decide what's best for their states", he said.

IL on Sunday reached 11,256 cases and 274 cases - an increase of 31 fatalities for seventh place - as Pritzker said the state is projected to experience a peak over the next two weeks. "That we have added additional closures to the orders that I have put in place based on data and metrics that we daily look at and move forward".

The surgeon general said the administration's guidelines, which call for strict social distancing until at least April 30, "are essentially our national stay-at-home order".

They should follow the guidelines set forth by the federal government, Adams said.

"But that's what is going to happen before it turns around, so just buckle down", Fauci said on CBS's "Face the Nation".

While most states have adopted restrictions on people's movement, a few states have declined to order residents to stay home.

"We are getting very close to that level right now".
