Shirley Douglas Dead: Kiefer Sutherland's Mother Dies at 86”

Actor Kiefer Sutherland has confirmed that his mother Shirley Douglas has died.

Douglas died following a bout of pneumonia, Sutherland wrote on Twitter, specifying that it was not related to the coronavirus pandemic. He also adds: My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life.

As the daughter of Tommy Douglas, the New Democratic Party leader who brought medicare to Canada, the actress was also politically minded. "Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming", Sutherland continued.

In 1965, Douglas married Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, with whom she had two children before they divorced - twins Rachel, a production manager, and Kiefer, who became a film and TV star in his own right.

Douglas spent her acting career between Canada and Hollywood, where she worked with big-name directors such as Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg. "My thoughts are with you and I wish you peace and strength". Douglas also shared son Thomas from a previous marriage.

In 1997, she appeared on stage with Sutherland in The Glass Menagerie at the National Arts Centre's Royal Alexandra Theatre.

In the '60s and '70s, while living in California, Douglas campaigned against the Vietnam War and protested for various politicial and social causes. Her support for the group brought controversy, though - she was refused a USA work permit and arrested in 1969 on conspiracy charges of possessing unregistered explosives.

She also was a co-founder of the first chapter in Canada of the Performing Artists for Nuclear Disarmament. Douglas was eventually exonerated.

In 2013, Rick Mercer described Douglas as one of the greatest actresses Canada has ever produced.

She said she never anxious whether standing up for what she believed in - even in the days of the so-called Hollywood black list - would hurt her acting career. Her last film role was in the 2000 Canadian movie The Law of Enclosures, while her final TV appearance was in 2008's Degrassi: The Next Generation. She won some important roles onstage and appeared alongside actress Audrey Hepburn on film.

"Kiefer, I loved watching your mom's work". She was one of the country's loudest voices in support of publicly funded health care.
