Acting Navy Secretary Modly resigns amid USS Theodore Roosevelt controversy”

Modly warned the crew, who gave Crozier a rousing hero's sendoff as he left the ship Thursday, that the news media "has an agenda".

A statement Modly released on the incident said the public release of Captain Brett E. Crozier's letter unnecessarily created "a public panic, when what was called for was calm", and "did serious harm to his Sailors and the rest of our Navy when he created an atmosphere of crisis, while it was his primary duty to be a steady hand on a stormy sea". "I think, and always believed him to be the opposite".

"If he didn't think, in my opinion, that this information wasn't going to get out to the public, in this day and information age that we live in, then he was either A, too naïve or too stupid to be a commanding officer of a ship like this", Modly said, according to CNN. "I apologize for any confusion this choice of words may have caused".

Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly submitted his resignation Tuesday, just one day after leaked audio overheard him calling ousted U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt commander, Captain Brett Crozier, "stupid" in an address to the ship's crew.

Defence secretary Mark Esper said Mr Modly had "resigned of his own accord". "He's not thrown out of the Navy".

Previously, though, Trump had taken a harder line on Crozier: "I thought it was bad, what he did, to write a letter".

Modly initially defended his remarks in a statement Monday, issuing a statement that said, "I stand by every word I said". "I have the deepest respect for anyone who serves our country, and who places the greater good above all else".

"People are asking, 'why is the president getting involved?' I like to solve problems".

"The alternative is that he did it on goal", he added.

In particular, Modly has seemed out of touch as the Navy struggles to afford the scores of new ships it needs in the coming years in order to grow the fleet from today's 295 vessels to as many as 355. It was published by the San Francisco Chronicle, creating an worldwide news story.

"We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die", he wrote, requesting the quarantine of almost the entire crew. "It's deeply disappointing that he would deliver a speech on board a USA aircraft carrier suggesting that Captain Crozier might be "stupid" and bashing the media for trying to report the truth".

"The former vice president of the United States, Joe Biden, suggested just yesterday that my decision was criminal", Modly said, apparently referring to comments Biden made Sunday on ABC's Meet the Press and subsequently posted on Twitter. But aboard the Roosevelt, the acting navy secretary painted a more damning portrait of the sacked commander's alleged intentions. "This is a chain of command issue. It's an issue of trust and confidence in the captain of the ship". "We must now put the needs of the Navy, including the crew of the Teddy Roosevelt, first, and we must all move forward together".
