Red Cross seeks plasma donations from recovered COVID-19 patients”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to play a critical role in accelerating medical countermeasures to treat and prevent COVID-19 disease.

The US FDA announced on March 24 that it would allow researchers to begin experimental COVID-19 treatments using convalescent plasma - which is the plasma obtained from an individual who has recovered from the novel coronavirus.

Although some hospitals in NY already began to apply plasma convalescent patients Covid-19, Casadevall warns that the most important thing is to make controlled, clinical trial. There are some limited data to suggest that convalescent plasma and hyperimmune globulin may have benefit in the COVID-19 illness.

The FDA's initial effort was focused on facilitating access to convalescent plasma for the treatment of COVID-19 disease through an emergency investigational new drug application (eIND) process.

To help match donors to hospitals, the AABB, formerly the American Association of Blood Banks, this week issued guidelines on plasma collection. Researchers hope to use the technique to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients and boost the immune systems of health care providers and first responders.

"Dr. Casadevall and his colleagues from across Johns Hopkins and partners around the nation are working with creativity and persistence to face this disease head on", said Johns Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels. Pinckney became one of the nations first donors of 'convalescent plasma.' Doctors around the world are dusting off a century-old treatment for infections: Infusions of blood plasma teeming with immune molecules that helped survivors beat the new coronavirus.

Japan-headquartered global bio-pharmaceutical company Takeda has already initiated development of a plasma-derived therapy to treat high-risk individuals with COVID-19.

Doctors pray Pinckney's donation can help sick patients now.

In Canada, the research community has rallied together to design a national clinical trial on the use of convalescent plasma in treating the virus.

Michael Joyner, a professor of anesthesiology who assisted in setting up convalescent plasma trials at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, highlighted to the outlet that no one expects the treatment to have a "Lazarus-like effect on the ill". Antibodies present in it are proteins that might help fight the infection. The program was developed with funding from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response.

There are records that during the 1918 flu pandemicmore than a thousand 700 people receive transfusions of plasma, but it is hard to determine how effective they were based on the standards of medicine today.

Worldwide, almost 250,000 people have recovered from COVID-19, while about 65,000 of about 12 lakh infected people have succumbed to the disease.

Convalescent plasma was also successfully used during the 1918 flu pandemic, he said. "That wouldn't be helpful", said Dr. Julie Ledgerwood, from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

People who have fully recovered from COVID-19 for at least two weeks are encouraged to consider donating plasma, which could potentially help save the lives of up to four patients.

As mentioned, Canada isn't the only country now part of these studies, as many others that have been fighting the virus earlier like China, South Korea and Singapore, and they've actively been collecting convalescent plasma for this same objective.
