New Dehi: As India continues to battle coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, there are eight cities in the country which are reportedly accountable for more than 56 per cent of the total cases.

In Rajasthan, the state's health minister Raghu Sharma said about 52 percent COVID-19 patients have recovered, giving the state the best recovery rate in the country.

The biggest spike in numbers - 3900 over a period of 24 hours - was reported on Tuesday, May 5, as stated by the union health ministry.

Coronavirus cases in India rose past 50,000, the health ministry said today, with the pace of new infections showing no signs of abating despite a strict weeks-long lockdown in the world's second-most populous country.

Kerala has reported 503 coronavirus cases so far, while Odisha has 185 cases.

A senior officer in the western state of Maharashtra said the number of cases had almost doubled in the Police force there in the last week. These include more than 60 deployed for law and order duties in the Jamia and Chandni Mahal area of the national capital, and six from the escort team of the inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) that toured West Bengal to check COVID-19 containment measures in the state. The state saw 1,233 new cases and 34 deaths on May 6.

A large number of new cases in the state are linked to Chennai's Koyambedu market, which is considered one of the largest vegetable markets in Asia. Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Dadar and Nagar Haveli have reported a case each.

There are 2,351 COVID-19 cases in the Pune division with 132 deaths so far.

Punjab, in the meantime, saw its death toll rising to 28 and the total number of cases climbing to 1,644 after 118 more people tested positive.

He said that 3,400 people have so far tested positive for the disease in the state, of whom 1740 have recovered.

Maharashtra COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 16,758, new cases 1,233, deaths 651, discharged 3,094, active cases 13,013, people tested so far 1,90,879. "Aggressive behaviour change communication exercises need to be taken for removing stigma against reporting COVID-19", he noted.
