Nancy Pelosi pushes new virus package as Mitch McConnell hits 'pause'”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, has said the next relief package should be "big and bold", but she faces a divide in her party between between liberals who want an expansive package and moderates in tightly contested districts who want to compromise with Republicans. The House, which is much larger than the Senate, is not returning to Washington until at least next week.

For now, the House is staying away because of the pandemic, although the GOP-controlled Senate is open.

The national debate over reopening the economy has surfaced in miniature on Capitol Hill, where Senate Republicans, encouraged by Trump, have returned to Washington this week as an act of solidarity with the grocery clerks, truck drivers and other workers deemed essential during the lengthy shutdown.

The No. 2 Republican, Sen.

She has said previously that the next round of aid for states, cities, unemployed workers and more testing will cost roughly $1 trillion.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday it's time to push "pause" on more aid legislation - even as he repeated a "red line" demand that any new aid package include liability protections for hospitals, health care providers and businesses operating and reopening. Many lawmakers think the payroll tax cut is a bad idea because it only boosts paychecks but doesn't help people thrown out of their jobs. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Ca., chair of the Financial Services Committee, focused on helping homeowners, renters and small landlords make rent and mortgage payments, the statement said.

Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday with a repackaged set of demands. In late April she joined other congressional Republicans in asking the US secretary of state and attorney general to bring China to the International Court of Justice to answer for its handling of the new coronavirus, specifically for alleged withholding and giving inaccurate information to the World Health Organization.

Governors across the country have been urging members to loosen restrictions, arguing that without the federal government's help, states could be forced to go bankrupt at a time when they have twin economic and health crises.

"I've never thought that really would be very effective", Sen. "The elimination of Sanctuary Cities, Payroll Taxes, and perhaps Capital Gains Taxes, must be put on the table", Trump tweeted.

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a high-profile progressive, voted against the last stimulus bill, saying it didn't provide enough direct aid to individuals.

By reconvening, Senate Republicans are trying to set the terms of debate, frustrated that Pelosi was able to fill up earlier aid bills with Democratic priorities. But they're also reluctant to unleash federal funds beyond the almost $3 trillion that Congress has already approved for virus relief. "But to the extent this is going to be the Trump administration's scapegoat for its utter failure, we are not going to go along with that".

For her part, Pelosi recognizes that any bill drafted by Democrats will need more thorough culling than early Democratic efforts, which came under GOP attack for easy-to-criticize items such as aid to the Kennedy Center and material taken from the so-called Green New Deal.

Pelosi had indicated more than $800 billion could be needed, but her office declined to confirm a final figure Tuesday. "We put all this money in, which is fine", Kudlow told reporters at the White House. "This is going to be the dominant issue in every election in the country", Cornyn said.

It's not just lawmakers at risk.
