Zoom buys Keybase to boost encryption capabilities - Cloud

Zoom buys Keybase to boost encryption capabilities - Cloud”

"Bringing on a cohesive group of security engineers like this significantly advances our 90-day plan to enhance our security efforts", Yuan said.

In a statement about the acquisition, Zoom's Eric S Yuan says: "We are proud to announce the acquisition of Keybase, another milestone in Zoom's 90-day plan to further strengthen the security of our video communications platform".

The company said it had bought Keybase, a secure messaging and file-sharing service, for an undisclosed price as it seeks engineering expertise to deliver more robust encryption for its conferencing platform.

"This acquisition marks a key step for Zoom as we attempt to accomplish the creation of a truly private video communications platform that can scale to hundreds of millions of participants, while also having the flexibility to support Zoom's wide variety of uses", said Zoom in an official blog post.

Financial terms of the buyout were not disclosed.

Keybase was founded in NY in 2014 by Chris Coyne and Maxwell Krohn, who were part of the founding team of OkCupid. Zoom's shareholders have since sued the company over allegations of fraud regarding this discrepancy.

Zoom has not and will not build a mechanism to decrypt live meetings for lawful intercept purposes.

Keybase was founded in 2014 and has raised nearly $11 million according to Crunchbase data.

Zoom Video Communications pushed forward on Thursday in its effort to revamp its security, striking a deal with the NY attorney general's office to protect users' privacy and purchased secure messaging startup Keybase.

The precise timeline for the integration of full end-to-end encryption to Zoom is not known; the company only indicated that it would be publishing a draft cryptographic design on May 22 and would be working with a range of customers and experts from there to come up with a final design and begin setting timelines for deployment.

Yuan said that the company's goal is now to provide "the most privacy possible" for every use case, while balancing the needs of users and preventing harmful behaviour on the platform. Encryption keys will be controlled by the host only.

It, then, goes into more detail about the implementation of such an encryption system, the details of which you can read here, and also clarifies a significant limitation that comes as a result of the heightened security: phone bridges, cloud recording, and non-Zoom conference room systems will all be disabled for end-to-end encrypted calls. However, Zoom says that it will only be bringing an end-to-end encrypted meeting mode to paid accounts and points out that this "privacy over compatibility" option will mean missing out on some features. "The cryptographic secrets will be under the control of the host, and the host's client software will decide what devices are allowed to receive meeting keys, and thereby join the meeting".
