Federal Bureau of Investigation serves warrant on Richard Burr in stocks sell-off probe”

Federal agents seized a cellphone belonging to a prominent Republican senator on Wednesday night as part of the Justice Department's investigation into controversial stock trades he made as the coronavirus first struck the USA, a law enforcement official said.

A search warrant was served for Republican North Carolina senator Richard Burr, the LA Times reported, and he turned over his phone to police when they visited his home in Washington.

The move comes as the DOJ intensifies its probe into a series of stock sales Burr made in February, just before USA markets took a nosedive, possibly on the basis of information gleaned during confidential briefings on the coronavirus outbreak.

Burr is accused of violating laws barring the profiting from information learned in the course of official congressional work. He was among a handful of lawmakers who received confidential briefings on the virus from USA health officials.

Spokespeople for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department did not return phone messages seeking comment.

Burr, who leads the Senate Intelligence Committee, has been scrutinized for selling up to $1.7 million in stocks in February after he received closed-door briefings about the virus before the market began trending downward. A spokeswoman for Burr did not return a phone call seeking comment. The stock trades were first reported by ProPublica.
