Ocasio-Cortez Joins Joe Biden’s Climate Change Panel

Ocasio-Cortez Joins Joe Biden’s Climate Change Panel”

Ocasio-Cortez will co-chair a group tasked with molding Biden's climate policy alongside former Secretary of State John Kerry, a longtime ally of the former vice president who was active on the campaign 2020 campaign trail, and worked during the Obama administration to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement, which the United States exited out of under President Donald Trump.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who will provide input on combating climate change and potentially become a key conduit between strong progressives who supported Sanders and backers of the more centrist Biden. Biden has continued to resist Sanders's "Medicare for All" plan and has instead promoted a public option that would operate alongside private coverage.

The inclusion of the freshman "Squad" member on the council comes as Biden struggles to unite the establishment and far-left wings of the Democrat Party leading into the general election against President Donald Trump.

The immigration group is headed by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., and Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, which backed Sanders' immigration policies during the primary. Elizabeth Warren to expand health coverage eligibility through Medicare, cancel student debt for millions of Americans and overhaul the nation's system for individuals to declare bankruptcy. Biden did not specify which task force she would be on during the interview.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his chief primary rival Sen. The groups will meet ahead of the Democratic convention and prepare recommendations for its platform committee as well as Biden.

"We've listened to Bernie supporters and, you know, for example, we have Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, she is on one of the panels", Biden told News8 in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Why it matters: The Biden campaign is forming multiple such groups to help bridge the policy divide with progressive Bernie Sanders supporters in the Democratic Party.

Sanders and Biden had clashed on the campaign trail over issues including health care and Social Security.

Shortly after the announcement, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about her decision to co-chair the task force.

In the same statement, Sanders echoed his sentiments during the campaign, urging the party to think "big, act boldly, and fight to change the direction of our country". Her Democrat opponent is former CNBC contributor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who thinks AOC can not relate to the working-class people in her district.
