Customers have been invited to claim their SEISS grant on a specified date, from 13 - 18 May. The date can be checked on HMRC's online checker at any time here.

Money should hit bank accounts by May 25 or six working days after a claim is made.

United Kingdom government says millions are expected to benefit from the scheme with the payments - to be paid in a single instalment covering three months and capped at £7,500.

Paul Scully, the small business minister, has been trying to help the 1.6m small business owner-directors who fall through the cracks of current coronavirus government bailout schemes. He said: "It is welcome that the government heeded our advice and created the admirable and vital Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS)".

Self-employed individuals who have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 outbreak are now able to apply for a grant from the government to provide extra support.

The government has produced an online checker which will allow Britons to cross-reference the date they have been given.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Sunak was asked if he would extend the grants, and replied: "We're looking at the best thing to do but... the reason for that is slightly different in that many of those self-employed people are not in sectors which are necessarily closed or have an employer who has reduced their hours". Claims can then be made from 17 May.

The maximum payment from the scheme is to be set at £7,500 - and will cover March, April and May.

He is asking if the self-employed scheme will also be extended till October, as happened with the furlough scheme earlier this week.

The SEISS is part of a comprehensive package of support for self-employed people, including Bounce Back loans, income tax deferrals, rental support, increased levels of Universal Credit, mortgage holidays and the various business support schemes the government has introduced to protect businesses during this time.

Matt Dowling, chief executive of Freelancer Club, a jobs directory for self-employed workers, said that for many freelancers, the scheme "offers nothing more than a further widening of the gap between them and the rest of society".

The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, said in March the scheme would cover those earning up to £50,000, or 95% of the self-employed, and be "one of the most generous schemes anywhere in the world".

"We are aware that some people who think they are eligible are using the checker and receiving a 'not eligible" response.
