Space Force flag unveiled at White House ceremony

Space Force flag unveiled at White House ceremony”

According to the White House, the dark blue and white of the flag is meant to represent the "vast recesses of outer space" and includes a elliptical orbit with three large stars meant to symbolize the branch's goal: "organizing, training and equipping" Space Force troopers, in the language of the Pentagon.

According to a White House pool report, Trump cheered the unfurling of the flag, commenting that space "is going to be the future".

Trump was presented with the flag by senior military officials, including chief master sergeant in the U.S. Space Force, Roger Towberman, and Gen. Jay Raymond, head of U.S. Space Command and the Space Force, who explained the significance behind the flag's design.

The flag includes a Delta Wing - long a symbol in the Air Force - meant to signify change and innovation. It sparked some Star Trek fan outrage for what some people have called its similarity to a logo in the science fiction franchise. This will be its sixth launch, and the first to be the responsibility of the newly-created US Space Force.

The president said during Friday's ceremony that the U.S.is building a "super-duper missile" that can travel "17 times faster than what we have right now".

Trump signed the Space Force into law back in December under the National Defense Authorization Act, saying the US needed to expand its military presence in space.

The Space Force was created in part to protect strategic American space infrastructure, including communications, navigation and spy satellites, from adversaries such as Russian Federation and China. The 16,000 airmen and civilians that make up the Space Force technically remain part of the Air Force, which previously oversaw offensive operations in space. "And the orbit around the globe signifies the space cape colors that fuel our American way of life".

Last week, the service released its first recruiting video.

Gen. Raymond and Air Force Secretary Barbara M. Barrett, in a Space Foundation webinar on May 6, said that while recruitment in the more terrestrial branches has waned during the global pandemic, they've seen growing interest.

It was manufactured by the Defense Logistics Agency's "Flag Room" in Philadelphia, the same entity that has made the president's personal flags. A satirical Netflix series, "Space Force", debuts later this month, starring Steve Carell and John Malkovich.
