Aaron Rodgers admits he was not 'thrilled' with Jordan Love pick

Aaron Rodgers admits he was not 'thrilled' with Jordan Love pick”

"I totally understand where he's coming from", LaFleur said Friday during a conference call shortly after Rodgers spoke.

"If I were to retire on the organization's timetable, then it's an easy decision", Rodgers said.

The drafting of Love was the first time Green Bay had selected and offensive skill position player since taking Rodgers in 2005.

Rodgers doesn't blame Love and says he's excited to work with the young QB for going forward.

Rodgers said the situation is different from Brett Favre's final years with the Packers after he was drafted, because Favre was hinting about retirement while Rodgers has expressed a desire to play for several more seasons, past the final four years left on his contract.

"I think it was more the surprise of the pick based on my own feelings of wanting to play into my 40s and really the realization that it does change the control-ables a little bit", Rodgers said Friday during a almost 40-minute conference call.

Rodgers spent his first three National Football League seasons backing up Favre before earning the starting spot in 2007, a move that led to Favre's exit from Green Bay. With a contract extension he signed in 2018, he is now slated to get paid $134 million over four years.

"I don't think it is going to drive him anymore as if they would have drafted somebody else". And he sounds like he's resigned to finish his career somewhere that's not Green Bay. "But if there comes a time when I still feel like I can play at a high level and my body feels great, then other guys have gone on and played elsewhere". While Aaron Rodgers is under contract through 2023, his status with the Packers looks to have changed. Green Bay would absorb a $31.6MM in dead money by moving on from Rodgers after 2020.

"The general reaction at first was surprise, like many people", Rodgers said of the Packers selecting his likely successor.

Rodgers on Friday said it's about controlling only what he can control.

This year's selection means the team clearly views Love as the heir apparent to Rodgers, who led the Packers to a 13-3 record last season.

Rodgers finished 12th in passer rating and 21st in completion percentage previous year, but still threw 26 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. Favre was 35 when the Packers drafted Rodgers. We had a great conversation the day after the draft. He seems like a really good kid with a good head on his shoulders. Rodgers said that, as someone who wants to play into his 40s, he understands that reality and the Love selection reinforced that.

Rodgers says he'll treat Jordan the same way he's treated all of his previous backups. guys he says he has great relationships with still to this day.
