Coronavirus: Twitter employees can work from home 'forever'

That much was made clear Tuesday morning when Dorsey began what he thought was a company-only livestream on Twitter-owned Periscope to discuss "consumer work" and "updates to the board".

The new option is for those employees who do not need to be physically present in office for certain roles that can not be done from homes. Even after the company reopens offices when conditions get back to normal amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Twitter said the past two months have proven that it's possible for remote workers to thrive and produce quality work.

The company said that opening offices will be their decision, when and if our employees come back, will be theirs.

The spokesperson said it would likely not be reopening its offices until September with a few exceptions, and environments will likely be somewhat different than before COVID-19 due to extra safety precautions to avoid the spread of germs.

"With very few exceptions, offices won't open before September. It will be careful, intentional, office by office and gradual", it added.

Twitter has already banned business travel before September 2020 and also canceled in-person company events for the rest of the year with events for next year to be assessed.

The news comes as the country's biggest tech giants extend their work-from- home policies amid the coronavirus pandemic, with some companies like Facebook and Google making work-from-home optional until next year.

Facebook will open most of its office from July 6.

Last week, Google said it has asked employees to take a day off on May 22, to address work-from-home related burnout during the pandemic. Each employee will be permitted to expense $1,000 of work-from-home supplies.
