India overtakes China in coronavirus cases, 11th most affected”

Of the 100 deaths reported since Thursday (14) morning, 44 were in Maharashtra, 20 in Gujarat, 9 in Delhi, 8 in West Bengal, five each in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, four in Rajasthan, two each in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and one in Andhra Pradesh.

This has helped India's fragile health care system stay ahead of the virus: it's death count at 2,753 is lower than China's 4,637 casualties.

Meanwhile, the Union government, on Friday, pointed out that almost 80 per cent of country's COVID-19 cases are in 30 municipal areas and asked the states to take steps to reduce fatality rates.

India is now the 11th most affected nation in the world, but each one of the top-ten have one lakh or more cases.

Though some new cases have emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan - the epicentre of the deadly virus - less than 100 people are now undergoing treatment across China, which recorded 4,633 deaths due to COVID-19 but more than 78,000 have been discharged after recovery, as per their official data. It was also informed that domestic manufacturers has reached the production capacity of almost 3 lakh PPEs per day and about 3 lakh N-95 masks per day which is sufficient to meet the requirement of the country in the near future.

As the economic costs of the lockdown mount, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun easing containment measures in some parts of the country which risks spurring fresh cases as more people interact and move about. Manipur has three cases.

Cases continue to rise in the southern state of Tamil Nadu with 9,227 cases and the number of positive cases in Gujarat stands at 9,267 with 566 deaths so far.

According to the Union Health Ministry, 30 municipal areas account for 79 per cent of India's coronavirus cases.

At this level, India has tested around 1,540 people per million of its population, much higher than the 94.5 per million population it was testing in late March but still far lower than the tests per million in other countries.

Delhi government has sent proposals to the centre. Goa reported 14 COVID-19 cases while Meghalaya and Puducherry registered 13 cases each.
