Italy Lifts Travel Restrictions, People Will Now Be Able To Visit Friends”

Italy will lift its travel restrictions from next month as the country's tough lockdown restrictions ease.

But all travel curb will be lifted from June 3 - a major milestone on Italy's road to recovery, with the government hoping to salvage the forthcoming vacation season, when Italians traditionally escape the cities for their annual summer breaks. Some regions had pushed for a swifter rollback, but Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has insisted on a gradual return to normal to prevent a second wave of infections.

Italy will reopen to worldwide tourism from early June and stop a mandatory 14-day mandatory quarantine period for all incoming holidaymakers, the government said on Saturday.

Employees of Michelin-starred "Marco Martini" restaurant take off a plastic sheet from chairs as they reorganize the restaurant to comply with social distancing rules due to the coronavirus disease, ahead of reopening next week, in Rome, Italy May 14, 2020.

"The country has the third-highest death toll in the world after the United States and the UK, with over 31,600 fatalities due to the virus, although new COVID-19 cases have been steadily dropping", reads the publication. Customers will also be required to wear face masks if they are not sitting at tables.

The lockdown has had a devastating economic impact on a country heavily dependent on the tourism industry.

Although Italy never formally closed its borders and has allowed people to cross back and forth for work or health reasons, it banned movement for tourism and imposed a two-week quarantine for new arrivals.

The advice from the Government is now to only travel overseas if essential.

The British Government has been urging Britons not to make plans as lockdown restrictions and travel warnings remain in place. Italians will also be able to move between regions, though local authorities can limit travel if infections spike.

The latest decree will also provide a boost to Italy's agricultural sector, which relies on some 350,000 seasonal workers from overseas.

Church services will also begin again, but attendees will be required to follow social distancing rules.

Following pressure the government has allowed restaurants, bars and hairdressers to reopen on Monday, two weeks earlier than initially planned.
