NASCAR and IndyCar have each called off their races this weekend.

Instead, NASCAR announced an updated schedule which includes a race in Atlanta that weekend.

What was to happen after that remained a mystery until Thursday, as NASCAR outlines its plans for racing until 21 June.

NASCAR is also bringing races to Bristol Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Martinsville Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, throughout the end of May and June.

"As we prepare for our return to racing at Darlington Raceway on Sunday, the industry has been diligent in building the return-to-racing schedule", NASCAR executive vice president Steve O'Donnell said in a statement.

Also Thursday, NASCAR announced the postponement of events at Kansas Speedway on May 30-31, Michigan International Speedway on June 5-7, the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Mid-Ohio on May 30 and the Gander Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on June 5.

The second wave begins in Bristol, Tennessee, with an Xfinity series race May 30 and a Cup Series race May 31. All racing that had been set for Iowa has been, or will be, reassigned to other venues.

"When NASCAR comes to Atlanta Motor Speedway, the eyes of the entire sports world will be on Georgia for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 and we intend to put on a great show".

It will be a summer in the South for NASCAR: The stock vehicle series announced Thursday it will stick to Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Florida and Alabama for June races - all of them without fans.

The Dixie Vodka 400, the annual NASCAR Cup Series race held in South Florida, was scheduled to run in March along with an Xfinity Series race and Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series event before the coronavirus outbreak forced NASCAR to postpone all events indefinitely less than two weeks ahead of time.

NASCAR said that further Iowa Speedway realignment dates will be announced in the future, as will the remainder of the adjusted schedule for all NASCAR series, which were postponed for two months due to COVID-19.
