Trump fires State Dept. watchdog critical of admin moves”

The Trump administration has fired the state department's inspector general who is reported to have been investigating the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo for a potential abuse of office. The White House did not immediately respond to an inquiry Friday night.

Linick, a former assistant US attorney in California and Virginia who has held the IG position since 2013, had overseen reports that were highly critical of the State Department's management policies since Trump took office.

The other side: Pelosi responded to Trump's Friday evening move, saying, "The President's late-night, weekend firing of the State Department Inspector General has accelerated his risky pattern of retaliation against the patriotic public servants charged with conducting oversight on behalf of the American people".

The State Department's inspector general briefed congressional aides Wednesday about an apparent attempt to smear the former US ambassador to Ukraine, who is seen by House Democrats as a key witness in their impeachment inquiry.

Two of Linick's most-read reports over the past year involved alleged retaliation by Trump political appointees against career employees.

Not long after Mr Linick's dismissal was announced, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said Mr Linick had opened an investigation into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Democratic lawmakers probe into Trump's firing of State Department watchdog

Linick will reportedly be replaced by Stephen Akard, who was nominated to serve as the director general of the Foreign Service in 2017 but later withdrawn amid objections he lacked experience to occupy such a high-ranking post.

In October, Linick turned over documents to House investigators that he had received from State Department's Counselor T. Ulrich Brechbuhl, a close Pompeo associate, which contained information from debunked conspiracy theories about Ukraine's role in the 2016 election.

"The president must cease his pattern of reprisal and retaliation against the public servants who are working to keep Americans safe, particularly during this time of global emergency", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. He now runs the department's Office of Foreign Missions.

A U.S. government watchdog fired suddenly by President Donald Trump was investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a Democratic politician has said. "Mr Linick's firing amid such a probe strongly suggests that this is an unlawful act of retaliation". "That is no longer the case with regard to this Inspector General".

On May 1, even as the coronavirus pandemic continued to ravage the country, Trump moved to oust Christi Grimm, the principal deputy inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services, whose office had issued a report revealing the dire state of the nation's response to the pathogen. The Inspectors General have a critical role in the achieve of these goals.
