At least 10 firefighters injured after explosion in Downtown Los Angeles”

Eleven firefighters have been injured and multiple buildings are ablaze after a massive explosion in downtown Los Angeles, officials have said.

The blast occurred about 6:30 p.m.at 327 E. Boyd Street, near Little Tokyo, according to LAFD.

Shortly after firefighters arrived and began an offensive battle, an explosion was reported and multiple buildings became involved, leading them to go into a defensive fight outside the buildings, Prange said.

The department issued a "mayday" call and characterized the incident as a "major emergency".

At about 10:00pm ET (3:00am BST), it was reported that more than 230 firefighters were responding to the fire. It sent flames and black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

According to LAFD, the building where the explosion occurred belonged to a butane honey-oil business.

Live footage from NBC Los Angeles shows the firefighters hosing the buildings from the roof.

The LAFD urged people in the area to find a way to shelter from the smoke.

"My thoughts are with our courageous (at) LAFD firefighters", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted.
