B.C. announces 21 new COVID-19 cases, over 1900 now recovered

B.C. announces 21 new COVID-19 cases, over 1900 now recovered”

British Columbia's workplace safety agency has released new guidelines as businesses across the province get set to reopen.

Henry said the province will be monitoring the number of people in hospital, the number of new cases not linked to any known outbreak, and the capacity to test and conduct contact tracing.

On Friday, provincial parks opened for day use across the province and school districts announced that schools will be permitted to begin in-class learning again on June 1. "The new outbreaks demonstrate that there continues to be risk of COVID-19 in our communities", said Henry.

Of the active COVID-19 cases, 51 individuals are hospitalized and 12 are in intensive care. She also said businesses must be able to identify if anyone is feeling unwell and never allowing anyone with symptoms to come to work. When the ventilation is not a great, and when you can actually spend time close to people in an enclosed space", She explains, "This May long weekend we need to pause.

She pointed out that engineering controls such as plexiglass barriers are effective in reducing transmission.

"We have to make a pact with each other that we are going to keep our germs to ourselves and stay away from others if we're feeling unwell", Henry said.

Henry said that physical distancing must also be maintained on public transit, and when that is not possible, non-medical masks can be used to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets.

There have been no new, confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island since Friday, May 8.

There are 15 active outbreaks at long-term care and assisted-living facilities in B.C., as well as five in hospital acute care units, Henry said.

A total of 1,932 people cases are now considered fully recovered, as well.

"We must continue to be measured and thoughtful with each step forward in our COVID-19 recovery".
