Barack Obama Talks COVID-19, Ahmaud Arbery & More In HBCU Commencement Address”

But his jabs at the pandemic response could further inflame tensions between the two most recent occupants of the White House.

Although Obama didn't directly name President Trump, he has previously criticized the administration's response as plagued by selfishness.

"It would have been bad even with the best of governments", Mr. Obama said on the call.

And in recent days Mr. Trump has unleashed tirades against Mr. Obama on Twitter and on television, resurrecting unfounded claims that his predecessor tried to bring him down by manufacturing the Russian Federation investigation.

Obama will also deliver a televised prime-time commencement address later Saturday for the high school Class of 2020 during an hour-long event with LeBron James, Malala Yousafzai and Ben Platt, among others.

Obama is expected to participate in a second commencement ceremony hosted by National Basketball Association star LeBron James for graduating high school seniors.

The broadcast is presented by the education advocacy group XQ Institute, The LeBron James Family Foundation, and The Entertainment Industry Foundation. "Edition", was streamed on the social media platforms of its corporate sponsor, JPMorgan Chase.

The commencement will feature an array of artists, athletes and musicians, and is being carried by major American TV networks.

"A disease like this just spotlights the underlying inequalities and extra burdens that black communities have historically had to deal with in this country. We see it in the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on our communities", he said.

He also emphasized the injustices faced by young black Americans like Ahmaud Arbery, who was recently shot while jogging in Georgia. He also discussed how the black community is more severely impacted by coronavirus around the country.

Graduate Together is not the only e-graduation ceremony at which former President Obama will make a speech in the coming weeks. "What is new is that so much of your generation has woken up to the fact that the status quo needs fixing; that the old ways of doing things don't work", Obama added.

In a private phone call with thousands of alumni of his administration last week, Obama called the Trump administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic an "absolute chaotic disaster".
