Chinese envoy says U.S. undermining global economy, virus fight

Chinese envoy says U.S. undermining global economy, virus fight”

The allegations come following reports in United States media over the weekend that U.S. security agencies were concerned about "Chinese hackers" supposedly gearing up to breach computer systems in USA institutions engaged in vaccine, treatment and testing applications related to COVID-19. "It is immoral to target China with rumors and slanders in the absence of any evidence", Zhao Lijian, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, said Monday after media reports that the DHS-FBI statement was imminent.

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency on Wednesday said they were probing attempts by Chinese government-aided hackers and others to target USA organisations conducting research on vaccines, treatments, and testing related to the coronavirus pandemic.

"China's efforts to target these sectors pose a significant threat to our nation's response to COVID-19, " the agencies said.

It has been reported that a U.S. pharmaceutical company may have been attacked by Iranian hackers.

"The FBI is investigating the targeting and compromise of USA organizations conducting COVID-19-related research by PRC-affiliated cyber actors and non-traditional collectors".

They also warned the hacking attempt could jeopardise the delivery of treatments.

According to him, China's most skilled hackers are increasing cyber attacks on America to steal this research. It said it was investigating digital break-ins at USA organizations by China-linked cyber actors.

US authorities urged all organizations researching the virus to increase their cybersecurity "to prevent surreptitious review or theft of COVID-19-related material".

The FBI and the cybersecurity agency said they were issuing the alert to raise public awareness of the potential threat and said additional technical details would be released in the coming days.

The warning comes just days following Sunday's report by The New York Times citing current and former U.S. security officials indicating that USA intelligence was planning to put out an alert about alleged efforts by Chinese spies to access US-based coronavirus research.
