Coronavirus Can cause 28 million cancelled Operations Internationally”

Most cancelled surgeries will be for non-cancer conditions.

"Although essential, cancellations place a heavy burden on patients and society. Some patients' conditions might deteriorate, worsening their quality of life as they wait for rescheduled surgery", said Aneel Bhangu, a consultant surgeon at the University of Birmingham and consortium member.

They based the figure on a 12-week period of peak disruption to hospital services due to COVID-19.

The study, published in the British Journal of Surgery, also indicated that each additional week of disruption to hospital services will be associated with a further 2.4 million cancellations.

"Across the nation, it is estimated that this will result in 114, 514 cancelled surgeries, including 12, 217cancer procedures".

"We anticipated then that that might be the best estimate of how long a peak shutdown period might occur in other countries of the world if we were each to experience such an epidemic peak".

Cuomo previously announced that the state will allow elective outpatient treatments to resume in counties and hospitals without significant risk of COVID-19 surge in the near term, and a total of 49 counties can now resume elective surgeries. According to researchers, at most 63 lakh bone-related surgeries have been postponed in about 12 weeks. That figure includes 27,390 cancer procedures.

Last month, Toronto's University Health Network estimated that at least 35 people in Ontario may have died during the pandemic because their cardiac surgeries were delayed.

"Understanding these numbers will help to prepare for post-peak-pandemic in order to start a plan for reopening elective surgery in a way that is safe and manageable", said Martin. Murphy assured that the decision to resume elective surgeries will take into account the urgent needs for personal protective equipment and for prioritizing procedures.

Led by researchers at the University of Birmingham, researchers collected detailed information from surgeons across 359 hospitals and 71 countries on plans for cancellation of elective surgery.

The surgeons were asked to report actual cancellation rates, likely cancellation rates or cancellation estimates, depending if their hospitals had experienced an outbreak or not, and whether the outbreak was active or had resolved.

The report also stated that 28.4 million elective surgeries would be cancelled worldwide this year. According to this, two crore 84 lakh surgeries worldwide can either be canceled or avoided in 2020 due to the most turmoil in hospitals due to Kovid-19.

"This has never happened before on a global basis in an era where we have the volume of surgery we have today", Janet Martin, an associate professor at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, said in a statement.

The project is collectively carried out by the CovidSurg Collaborative, and their study warns that the cancellations will lead to a hefty backlog that will create a variety of issues in the healthcare sector once the COVID-19 pandemic is overcome.

"If, after the disruption ends, the Ministry of Health increases the number of surgeries performed each week by 20 per cent compared to pre-pandemic activity".
