Coronavirus: Rory McIlroy critical of US president Donald Trump”

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy last played a round of golf with President Donald Trump more than three years ago, hasn't played with him since and says there's little chance he'll play with him again.

McIlroy's remarks came during a almost 90-minute interview on the McKellar Golf Podcast with Scottish golf journalists Lawrence Donegan and John Huggan.

The world's No. 1-ranked men's golfer accused Trump of trying to "politicize" the crisis, with 1.46 million confirmed cases in America and 87,025 people having died after receiving a positive test for coronavirus.

"I haven't done it since. out of choice", McIlroy said.

Trump has played with several current and former pro golfers, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, 2016 U.S. Open victor Dustin Johnson and 2017 PGA Championship victor Justin Thomas. He said he did so out of respect for the office of the presidency. He also said he had no complaints about Trump during their 2017 round, which took place one month after the president's inauguration.

Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson headline the TaylorMade Driving Relief this Sunday, the return of live televised golf on Sky Sports.

"The day that I did spend with him and others was very enjoyable", said McIlroy, who is from Northern Ireland.

McIlroy said the president was wrong to turn the virus outbreak into a political issue. There's some stuff that just is awful. "There is a bit of diplomacy that you need to show, and I just don't think he's showing that, especially in these times".

The pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 86,000 people in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University.

McIlroy did an hour-plus interview for the McKellar Journal podcast in which he was asked whether he regretted the February 2017 round with Trump because of criticism on social media.

During the duo's almost 90-minute conversation, McIlroy said: "There's some things that go on outside of golf which I have opinions on". "I know it's very self-serving of me to say 'No, ' and if I don't, then it means I'm not putting myself in position to be under scrutiny and that I'm avoiding that".

The PGA Tour used to have the Skins Game as an unofficial money event, with Greg Norman and Fred Couples in the list of former winners, while more recently The Challenge: Japan Skins was held ahead of the inaugural ZOZO Championship.
