'Graduate Together 2020' Line-Up: All The Stars Appearing and Giving Commencement Addresses

'Graduate Together 2020' Line-Up: All The Stars Appearing and Giving Commencement Addresses”

Barack Obama indirectly criticised his successor Donald Trump during a virtual graduation ceremony on Saturday, in a rare public judgment from the former U.S. president during the coronavirus pandemic.

It was the former United States president's second commencement speech of the day - and his second rare public rebuke of Trump - after he earlier addressed graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

"A lot them aren't even pretending to be in charge", he added.

"You're being asked to find your way in a world in the middle of a devastating pandemic and a awful recession".

But earlier this month, he harshly criticised Trump's handling of the pandemic as an "absolute chaotic disaster" in a call with 3000 members of his administrations obtained by Yahoo News.

Obama is also giving a speech paying tribute to the graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities as part of Show Me Your Walk, HBCU Edition at 2 p.m. ET on May 16 on the HBCUStudent website.

Obama also spoke at length about the impact the pandemic is having on black communities in the US.

In his comments Saturday, Obama also highlighted how the health crisis has underscored racial inequality in America, and expressed outrage at the shooting death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, killed on February 23 while out for a jog in Georgia.

"A disease like this just spotlights the underlying inequalities and extra burdens that black communities have historically had to deal with in this country", he said at the first ceremony.

Obama pointed out that these issues aren't new, but what is different is the younger generations' desire to change it.

"Injustice like this isn't new", Obama went on to say.

The 44th president congratulated the graduates and commiserated with them over the hard world they faced.

That celebration was followed by a second, star-studded prime-time ceremony for high school students in which Obama continued along the same lines, telling students to step up where leaders had failed. "But you made a sacrifice, and you did it to keep your community safe and healthy", James told graduates. More than ever, this is your moment.

The commencement remarks were the latest sign that Obama intends to play an increasingly active role in the coming election.
