Michigan Rep. Justin Amash ends his Libertarian bid for White House”

Amash launched an exploratory committee in April to seek the Libertarian Party's 2020 nomination and announced he was running on April 28.

In a lengthy Twitter thread, Amash wrote: "After much reflection, I've concluded that circumstances don't lend themselves to my success as a candidate for president this year, and therefore I will not be a candidate".

Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI), the Never Trump libertarian-leaning congressman who quit the Republican Party previous year, announced Saturday that he will not run for president after recently launching an exploratory committee for the Libertarian Party's White House nomination. He said "the new reality of social distancing levels the playing field among the candidates in many respects, but it also means lesser known candidates are more dependent on adequate media opportunities to reach people". The third-party Libertarian candidate noted that "this environment presents extraordinary challenges".

It was the end to a quixotic process that had potential to upend a close presidential contest.

"I don't know what is next for @justinamash, but I know he will always choose an honorable path", Swalwell tweeted.

Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans had slammed Mr. Amash for dipping his toes in the water, saying his candidacy would only serve to boost Mr. Trump's re-election chances.

Amash would have faced almost impossible odds of winning the presidency. "Thank you my friend". After switching to "independent", Amash joined House Democrats in voting to impeach Trump a year ago over his communications with Ukraine.

President Trump celebrated Amash's departure from the GOP, branding him a "total loser".

Mr. Amash had joined Democrats in December to vote to impeach Mr. Trump on counts of abuse of power and obstruction of justice over the president's allegedly strong-arming Ukraine into digging up political dirt on Joseph R. Biden, now the likely Democratic presidential nominee.
