Rumors Suggest Ground Breaking Battery News From Tesla Coming Soon”

His boasts included new "million mile" batteries created to last much longer than previous units, and reduce cost for both Tesla and customers.

While most cars are scrapped well before they reach a million miles, the long-lasting batteries could be recycled or given a second life as energy storage for supporting a grid.

The low cost batteries will make the cost of making electric cars cheaper than gas cars and will enable Tesla to slash the price of its electric cars worldwide giving Tesla a competetive edge.

Reuters claims to have more details about Tesla's battery cell plans. Most of what we know about the probable technology comes from the expertise of the new hires and studies released by Tesla's partners.

A few months ago, we reported Tesla would be using Prismatic battery cells developed by Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) for the Model 3 standard plus variant. CATL's cobalt-free lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs have just recently fallen below $80/kWh, with battery cells dropping below $60/kWh. The automaker also has said it wants to supply electricity to consumers and businesses, but has not provided details.

Tesla is also considering new high-speed, highly automated battery manufacturing processes as part of efforts to reduce labor costs and increase production capacity, Reuters quoted the sources as saying. Dahn. According to a Reuters source, CATL will supply a new battery to Tesla for the Chinese oriented Model 3.

CATL will be developing these electric batteries using the technology provided by Prof. While first versions are destined for the China-made Teslas apparently, it is unclear which models would benefit from the new cells.

Working it up altogether in the end - Tesla plans to make an EV as affordable as (or more) an internal combustion vehicle.

Dahn and his team began an exclusive five-year research partnership with Tesla in mid-2016, but the relationship dates back at least to 2012.

The 100$/kWh or million-mile battery is said to rely on NMC chemistry with little cobalt. Secondly, after their primary usage in EVs, these batteries will be given "second life" by using them in the grid storage system.
