South Korea Reports Single Digit Domestic Coronavirus Cases; Plans to Reopen Schools”

It marked the fewest daily cases since Itaewon, a multicultural nightlife district in Seoul, emerged as a hotbed for coronavirus cluster infections.

Around 5,500 people were estimated to have visited Itaewon clubs between April 24 and May 6. Of the new cases, 10 were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,160.

After weeks of almost no new domestic coronavirus cases, South Korea relaxed its lockdown on May 6, but a subsequent spike in infections linked to Seoul's Itaewon nightlife neighbourhood forced a rapid re-think.

South Korea's Deputy Health Minister has said that there are no plans to reinstate social distancing measures in South Korea, despite a rise in infections attributed to venues in Seoul.

In an effort to prevent the Itaewon infection cluster from expanding into a mass outbreak, health authorities said they will disinfect nightclubs and bars this weekend. Daily infections remain under 50 a day despite the re-openings.

South Korea has flattened the infection curve with its massive testing and contact tracing since its first case on January 20, Yonhap News Agency reported. The normally busy popular global district was almost empty after health authorities discovered new COVID-19 cases among patrons of bars and clubs in the trendy Seoul neighborhood. Clubs and karaoke rooms are excluded in some areas.

However, due to the cluster cases, the country has made a decision to push back the reopening of schools by one week. Government officials say the officer attended a wedding with a friend who had visited a karaoke establishment.

Should the country observe no further boom in the number of cases over the weekend, South Korea could safely say that it has brought the Itaewon-linked cases under the control of quarantine authorities, they added.
