However, after a lengthy delay an official vote only took place on May 15 and clubs made a decision to name Club Brugge champions and settle the rest of the table by leaving it as it was.

That means bottom side Waasland-Beveren will be relegated, while Leuven and Beerschot still have to decide who'll replaced them.

Club Brugge has been be awarded its 16th Belgian title after the country's professional soccer league announced the end of the season with the current standings declared final.

It is a 17th title for Club Bruges and their third in the past five seasons.

Club Brugge have been named the champions of Belgium as clubs voted to end the 2019-20 season with European spots and one relegation for Waasland-Beveren also confirmed.

The general assembly was postponed four times after the pro league and clubs realised they required a government decision to invoke "force majeure" and fend off legal claims from TV rights holders and sponsors for not completing the season.

There was one match in the regular season left before the pandemic.

These are but some of the questions a fractured general assembly of the Pro League needs to address to tackle the growing impasse in the Belgian game. The two teams that are in this final are Club Brugge and Royal Antwerp. However, the coronavirus pandemic put an end to it.

The Belgian post-season format would usually see a second play-off competition between the remaining 10 teams in the top flight and the top six teams from the second tier, with the victor going on to face a team from the other play-off competition for the country's final European place.

The new campaign is scheduled to start on 7 August, it was also decided on Friday.
