Dr. Deena Hinshaw updates Albertans Friday on COVID-19”

They'll then need to post the measures at their place of business or online.

Hinshaw said those businesses that are reopening are required to fill out a form at the Alberta Biz Connect site that details what they are doing to reassure customers and staff that their health is being protected.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Thursday he understands and supports the province's decision to delay reopening for hospitality businesses and hair salons, though he said he wished the announcement was made sooner.

The rising number of cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Calgary, Alberta pushed the Alberta Health Services (AHS) to expand testing capacities to include asymptomatic residents who work outside as the cases in the area are twice the number of cases of the rest of the province. Businesses listed in stage one for both cities will be spread out over the course of two weeks. Hair salons and barbershops will also reopen on May 25 in Calgary and Brooks.

More news: How to work during a trip and all make it up?

Alberta should know by late next week whether the first stage will bring a "sudden, sharp increase" in cases, Hinshaw added. "And barring an unforseen spike in new cases or hospitalizations, we should be able to stick to this slightly more gradual schedule". This brings the total to 6,300. More than 5,200 Albertans had recovered from COVID-19.

There are 73 cases in hospital including 12 in intensive care units. The County of Grande Prairie is still reporting one active case and four recovered cases.

Hinshaw provided clarity on rules around how many people can gather together at any one time. Restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars can open at 50 per cent capacity. Places of worship and funeral services are allowed as long as they follow provincial guidelines.
