Ex-Yankees World Series title-winning GM Bob Watson dead at 74

Ex-Yankees World Series title-winning GM Bob Watson dead at 74”

He finished with 184 career home runs, a.295 batting average and a.811 OPS. 'Bob Watson enjoyed a unique and remarkable career in Major League Baseball that spanned six decades, reaching success at many different levels, including as a player, coach, general manager and MLB executive'.

Watson's death was announced by the Houston Astros, the team for whom he played as a first baseman and outfielder from 1966 to 1979.

Former American baseball player and Houston Astros legend Bob Watson passed away on Thursday evening (local time) in Houston at the age of 74.

The two-time All-Star, who retired in 1984, also posted solid offensive numbers during his career. In 17 career postseason games, he had an average of.371. He was an All-Star on the field and a true pioneer off it, admired and respected by everyone he played with or worked alongside.

Mr. Watson also became a big hit off the field for his cameo, along with several Astros teammates, in the 1977 comedy film "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training".

He was the Oakland Athletics hitting coach when the club won the American League pennant in 1988 at the height of the Bash Brothers era with Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire.

After his playing career, Watson became the second black general manager in Major League Baseball history when he was hired by the Astros in 1993.

The Astros mourned the passing of one of the team's first iconic players, an MLB All-Star in 1973 and 1975. Watson later took the same job with the Yankees and helped guide the storied franchise to a World Series title in 1996. 'Bob will be missed, but not forgotten'.

Watson later worked for Major League Baseball as the vice president overseeing discipline and rules and on-field operations before retiring in 2010.

In 1994, Watson was diagnosed with prostate cancer and became an advocate in raising awareness for the disease.

Watson has had multiple health issues in retirement, according to the New York Daily News, including both circulatory problems and hypertension, before he started suffering from kidney failure. "We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Carol, his daughter Kelley, his son, Keith and to the rest of his family, friends and many admirers".

In March, he attended a ceremony in which the Astros dedicated an education center in his honor at the Astros Youth Academy in Houston.
