Face coverings recommended as restrictions eased

Face coverings recommended as restrictions eased”

"We may in the coming weeks, as Germany has, see an increase in the R number as we ease the restrictions".

Addressing the country today An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has advised that members of he public should wear "face coverings when using busy public transport or in enclosed indoor public areas such as retail outlets".

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan stressed that wearing a mask is another measure to combat the spread of the virus, not a "silver bullet" to beat the virus.

"The reason for that is that while all the science around it indicates it may be beneficial, it is not a substitute for washing your hands properly and social distancing". They include garden centers, hardware stores, farmers' markets, optical shops, car, motorbike and bicycle fix shops, outdoor tennis courts, public beaches and mountain walks.

Mr Varadkar announced that outdoor workers can return to work from Monday, including but not limited to construction and gardening.

As can outdoor sports facilities such as pitches, tennis courts and golf courses, with strict social distancing in place.

This is only the first part of slow and measured lifting of restrictions which will continue throughout the summer, with some more retail outlets and commercial services allowed to reopen from May 18.

The Taoiseach said that he hoped to be able to announce a movement to Phase Two in three weeks time but said this depended on the progress that is made.

"Everyday we need to follow the basic public health and hygiene advice (.) Nothing is guaranteed, and the only thing that is inevitable is the spread of the virus".

Mr Varadkar said coronavirus was an "inferno that is raging around the world". We must extinguish every spark, quench every ember.

"We are bound together and we must rely on each other if we are to succeed, which we will", he said.

What restrictions are going to be lifted and when?

Speaking at the Covid-19 briefing on Wednesday morning, she said: "We are aware of questions around the potential use of face masks or coverings as we move to lift restrictions".

During Friday's Stormont update, Economy Minister Diane Dodds said she was bringing a roadmap for recovery for the economy to the Executive next week and confirmed the opening of a £40m hardship fund for micro-businesses.

"There are some multiples - big, big businesses who cover all of those operations and will still be allowed to reopen, so from a competition point of view they have an advantage over the exclusively homeware shops".

Office products and services; and Electrical, IT and phone sales, fix and maintenance services for home.
